The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides financial assistance to people with disabilities to help cover their transport and travel expenses. This funding is designed to support the travel costs of the person with the disability and, if necessary, their support worker. However, it does not cover the travel expenses of support workers or family members. The amount of funding an individual receives is based on their specific disability, their travel needs, and the level of support they require for their travel.
The NDIS allocates transport funding to participants based on their individual needs and circumstances, particularly their ability to use public transport due to their disability. This funding is generally categorised into three levels, with higher funding provided for those with greater participation in work or study.
We provide a wide range of NDIS services to participants
Here’s a breakdown of the typical NDIS transport funding levels per year (note that these amounts can be subject to change and are usually paid fortnightly):
Level 1: Up to $1,606 per year
Level 2: Up to $2,472 per year
Level 3: Up to $3,456 per year
Exceptional Circumstances:
In some exceptional cases, participants may receive higher funding if they have general or funded supports in their plan that specifically enable their participation in employment. These cases are assessed individually.
Eligibility: Participants must generally be unable to use public transport without substantial difficulty due to their disability.
Purpose: Funding covers transport to activities like work, study, medical appointments, social events, and community participation.
What’s NOT covered:
The NDIS typically does not cover:
Payment Methods: Transport funding can be paid directly to the participant’s bank account fortnightly (self-managed) or managed by the NDIS or a plan manager.
Vehicle Modifications and Travel Training: The NDIS can also fund vehicle modifications to a private vehicle if it’s considered reasonable and necessary, and provide funding for training to help participants learn to travel more independently.
It’s crucial for participants to discuss their specific transport needs during their NDIS planning meeting to ensure appropriate funding is included in their plan.
